NEWS RELEASE: Jaffer announces plan to integrate 911 with 211
Edmonton, AB (October 2, 2025) - Today, Edmonton mayoral candidate Rahim Jaffer announced a bold plan to integrate the city’s 911 emergency services with 211 community and social services, ensuring the right resources are dispatched to the right problems in Edmonton.
“Currently, too many calls to 911 are non-emergencies, placing unnecessary pressure on first responders,” Jaffer said. “By linking 911 with 211, Edmonton would become a national leader in smart emergency management, ensuring urgent issues get immediate attention while social and community concerns are directed to the supports that can actually solve them.”
Jaffer said his plan will ensure the right resources go to the right problems - meaning less waste for taxpayers, faster response times for victims, and a safer, stronger city.
“This is about efficiency, safety, and respect for taxpayers,” Jaffer said. “Our police, fire, and EMS teams will be able to focus on emergencies, while residents in need of social, housing, or health-related support will be quickly connected with the right services through 211. It’s a win-win.”
The proposal is part of Jaffer’s broader platform to build a safer, more effective, and compassionate city for all of Edmonton.
