NEWS RELEASE: Jaffer releases mosquito and dandelion control policy

Edmonton, AB (Sept. 25, 2025) - Today, Edmonton mayoral candidate Rahim Jaffer released his common sense mosquito and weed control policy – one that takes urgent action to restore the condition of public spaces and support struggling local businesses.

“When parks are overrun with mosquitoes and dandelions take over our fields and boulevards, it drags down the quality of life for everyone,” Jaffer said. “Families stop going outside, patios sit empty, and businesses lose customers. Edmonton deserves better. It’s time for the City to get back to basics – because when we let pests take over, we lose our public spaces, our sense of community, and our local economy.”

Jaffer’s policy outlines a practical plan to bring back mosquito spraying and seasonal weed maintenance, and ensures the city is held to the same standards as homeowners. The policy includes three key commitments:

  • Resume Aerial Mosquito Spraying: mosquito eggs can lay dormant for up to 10 years. One heavy rain shower can unleash mosquitoes previously dealt with by existing targeted measures.

  • Dandelion Control on Public Lands: Implement regular weed spraying on city boulevards, medians, playgrounds, real estate developments and community fields to restore aesthetics and playability.

  • Business Support Zones: Prioritize pest control along commercial corridors, patios, and shopping areas to help boost foot traffic and outdoor activity.

“People shouldn’t have to choose between getting mosquito bites or staying indoors. And businesses shouldn’t lose customers because their sidewalks and patios are surrounded by weeds,” Jaffer said. “We need to ensure the city is spending money in a way that makes life better for all of Edmonton. This policy gets the job done.”

This policy is part of Jaffer’s broader vision to revive the city for all of Edmonton.
