The Rahim Jaffer Campaign o/a Jaffer for Mayor (“the Campaign,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect your personal information in compliance with Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), the Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act (EFCDA), and other applicable privacy and election laws.

1. Information We Collect

We may collect personal information from you in the following ways:

  • Donations: When you make a financial contribution, Alberta law requires us to collect your name, residential address, and contribution amount. Contributions are only permitted from individuals ordinarily resident in Alberta.

  • Public Disclosure of Donors: As required by the EFCDA, contributions over $50, or cumulative annual contributions above $250, must be reported publicly with the donor’s name and address. This disclosure is mandated by law and cannot be withdrawn.

  • Volunteering & Event Participation: If you volunteer, request a lawn sign, or attend a Campaign event, we may collect your name, contact information, and preferences to coordinate activities.

  • Voter Engagement: If you sign up for newsletters, petitions, or surveys, we may collect information you voluntarily provide, such as postal code, opinions, or concerns.

  • Website & Digital Interactions: We may collect technical information (IP address, browser type, cookies, device information) to improve website performance and outreach.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use personal information for Campaign purposes only, including:

  • Processing and receipting donations in compliance with Alberta election finance law.

  • Meeting disclosure requirements under the EFCDA.

  • Communicating with donors, volunteers, and supporters.

  • Coordinating canvassing, phone banking, events, and other campaign activities.

  • Conducting lawful voter outreach.

  • Meeting legal obligations under Alberta’s privacy and election statutes.

3. Donor Disclosure under Alberta Law

Under the EFCDA, the Campaign is required to disclose donor information for certain contributions:

  • $50 or less: Contributions may be accepted anonymously; no disclosure is required.

  • Over $50 up to $250 (annually): Donor name and address must be recorded internally but are not publicly disclosed.

  • Over $250 (annually): Donor name, address, and total contribution amount must be reported publicly in our official financial disclosure statement.

By making a contribution, you acknowledge and consent to the required disclosure of your information as mandated by law.

4. How We Share Your Information

We will not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We may share information only in the following cases:

  • Legal Compliance: Public disclosure of donors under the EFCDA.

  • Regulatory Authorities: To Elections Alberta or municipal election authorities, as required.

  • Service Providers: With trusted third-party providers (e.g., payment processors, campaign management tools, email platforms), who must protect the information and use it only for campaign purposes.

  • Staff & Volunteers: On a need-to-know basis for campaign operations.

If information is processed or stored outside Canada, it may be subject to foreign privacy laws.

5. Data Security & Retention

  • We apply safeguards (administrative, technical, and physical) to protect personal information from loss, unauthorized access, or misuse.

  • Donor records will be retained as required under the EFCDA for reporting and audit purposes.

  • Volunteer and supporter information will be retained only during the active campaign period and for up to one year afterward, unless otherwise required by law.

6. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access and request correction of your personal information (other than donor disclosures required by law).

  • Withdraw consent for non-financial communications (e.g., newsletters, volunteer coordination).

  • File a complaint with the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta (OIPC) if you believe your rights have been violated.

7. Cookies & Online Tracking

Our website may use cookies and analytics tools. You can adjust your browser settings to refuse cookies, though this may limit functionality.

8. Third-Party Links

Our website and materials may link to third-party services (e.g., event registration, payment processing, or social media). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites.
