Jaffer unveils free parking plan to help revive Edmonton

Edmonton, Alta. – Edmonton mayoral candidate Rahim Jaffer today announced a bold new plan to implement free parking across the city on evenings, weekends, overnight and statutory holidays — part of a broader vision to revive the city’s core and support local businesses.

“Free parking is about more than just convenience — it’s about signalling that Edmonton is ready to come alive again,” said Jaffer. “For too long, city hall has made it harder for people to support local businesses, enjoy our entertainment districts or simply spend time in their own city.

“The councillors who oversaw that decline aren’t offering any solutions — they’re offering more of the same. If we want to truly revive Edmonton, we need bold new ideas that make the city more accessible, more affordable and more alive. This is just the beginning.”

Jaffer’s free parking plan is aimed at reducing barriers for residents, supporting small businesses and restoring pride in public spaces.

Key features of the plan include:

  • Free parking on evenings (after 5 p.m.), weekends, overnight and all statutory holidays

  • A 30-minute grace period for pick-ups and drop-offs

  • A flat rate of $2.50 per hour between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., down from current rates of $3.50 to $4.50

“People avoid downtown because they’re tired of feeling gouged just to visit a coffee shop or take their kids to a show,” said Jaffer. “Free parking is one step toward a larger revival — where we restore safety, bring back energy and entertainment, and give families a reason to believe in their city again.”

Paid parking would continue on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with surge pricing remaining in effect for Oilers games and major events to manage peak demand.

Jaffer said his campaign will continue to release practical policies rooted in real-world experience and a belief in Edmonton’s potential.

“We’re not just tweaking policies — we’re building momentum for a new Edmonton,” he said. “Free parking sends a clear message: we want you here. And we’re ready to revive this city for everyone who calls it home.”
